Proper Brushing/Flossing

Good oral hygiene is vital for strong healthy teeth. This includes a daily brushing and flossing routine. Poor oral health and untreated oral diseases and conditions can have a significant impact on quality of life. And in many cases, the condition of the mouth mirrors the condition of the body as a whole. Below are a few tips on proper brushing and flossing techniques:
  oral hygiene

BRUSHING:

Brush 2-3 times daily using an ADA approved fluoride toothpaste.

Holding the head of the brush at a slight angle against the teeth, gently brush in a back and forth motion using short strokes.

Brush all surfaces of the teeth (front, inside, and chewing surfaces), paying extra attention to those hard to reach areas in the back of the mouth.

Brushing the tongue will also help eliminate bacteria which can cause bad breath.

Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months.

CLEANING APPOINTMENTS:

Our cleaning appointments are all done by a hygienist.  A hygienist is specialty trained and educated to clean and maintain your teeth.

Our hygiene appointments are 1 hour long, giving our hygienist enough time to properly clean your teeth.  She will then educate both adults and children on the importance of oral hygiene at the dental office and at home.

  FLOSSING:

The American Dental Association recommends that you floss at least once a day, after brushing, to remove plaque and food residue caught between the teeth. Flossing is very important in the prevention of tooth decay and gum disease.

Using about 18 inches of floss, wind most of it around one finger and the rest around the same finger on the opposite hand. Hold the floss tightly between your thumb and forefinger.

Gently guide the floss between your teeth to the gum line, forming a C against the side of one tooth.

With an up and down motion, rub the floss against the side of the tooth. Repeat this motion for all of your teeth.

There are many flossing aids available for those who have trouble with traditional dental floss. These include picks, sticks, and flossing brushes. Ask your dentist for more information on these helpful tools.
